Hair Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a concentrate of platelet-rich plasma protein derived from whole blood, centrifuged to remove red blood cells, and therefore it has a greater concentration of growth factors than whole blood. PRP (platelet-rich plasma) therapy for hair loss is a three-step medical treatment in which a person's blood is drawn, processed, and then injected into the scalp. In some cases, PRP injections can effectively regrow hair without the need for surgery and produce a very natural look.

  • Platelets contain hundreds of proteins called Growth Factors and Cytokines. The Growth Factors and Cytokines are signaling proteins and have a stimulating effect on the Stem Cells located within the targeted areas of hair follicles.

A 2015 study of 10 people receiving PRP injections every 2 to 3 weeks for 3 months showed improvements in the number of hairs, the thickness of those hairs, and the strength of the hair roots. This study helps provide extra support to the findings of other PRP and hair loss studies.

  • PRP Treatment is a simple office-based procedure. The patient’s own blood is drawn, similar to a lab test, into a special tube. The tubes are then placed into a centrifuge that will separate the PRP from the other blood components. The separated PRP is then drawn into another syringe used for injections. The entire process, including the blood sample processing and the completion of the injections, will take approximately 30 minutes. After the area has been numbed with a topical spray, the PRP will be injected.

It is advised to initially have a series of three PRP sessions scheduled roughly about 4-6 weeks apart. Maintenance afterward will vary from person to person depending on one’s rate of hair loss.

The option to add Exosomes and additional Growth Factors are also available. These options can be discussed at your appointment.

  • PRP hair restoration is suitable for both men and women. PRP therapy offers the opportunity for hair restoration for those patients who are not candidates for surgery or those patients wanting a non-surgical approach to treatment.
